Welcome to the new Room 10 classroom blog! Keep checking in because I will be adding new posts regularly to show what we have been learning about. Here is what we are doing this term:
Inquiry
Topic
This term the school-wide theme for Inquiry is ‘The Living World’ with a major science
focus, and the Junior School will be focusing specifically on Animals. We will be learning about grouping
animals, adaptations animals have made for living in their habitat and will
conclude with the children carrying out their own research on a chosen animal
and presenting this using the i-pads.
Religious
Education
For RE this term we will spend the first five weeks learning
about The Holy Spirit and then move onto learning about The Church.
Mathematics
For maths we will continue to work on addition and subtraction
strategies and building up our number knowledge. For two weeks in the middle of
the term we will focus on Measurement investigating weight, volume and
capacity.
Some children are excelling at Mathletics, and have gained
Silver level certificates - not an easy feat! An easy way to do this is to
build in 15 minutes of Mathletics as part of the homework each night.
Literacy
For writing this term, we will be starting with narrative stories,
then a brief look at report writing when it’s time to carry out our animal
research.
Reading continues with building up strategies to de-code unknown
words, making sure meaning is always retained, and starting to increase
fluency.
Te Re
Maori
We are exploring colours, feelings, instructions, animals, and
parts of the body. The Junior School are meeting once a fortnight to learn
these concepts together, and then will practice them back in our own
classrooms.
The
Arts
We are focusing on Painting this term, where the children will
learn some new techniques including colour mixing, blending and different brush
strokes. We will be using the Animals theme as a basis for our paintings.
For drama we are using the theme of animals to explore movement,
voice and characterisation. Music will incorporate listening, playing, rhythm
and beat.
Physical
Education
This term we will be starting with training for the school cross
country run in week 2, and then developing large ball skills through playing
winter sports.
